Bringing together the world’s foremost scientists in a comfortable and effective environment to evaluate and reward promising biomedical research.
Dedicated to the advancement of biomedical science, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund headquarters building stands gracefully and monumentally as a testament to the mission and projected longevity of this private foundation. From the strongly articulated geometrical forms to the Renaissance inspired details, the facility design supports the significance of the research supported by this philanthropy.
John directed the programming and interior design for this important philanthropy beginning with a survey of Fund staff members. The building and interiors developed result in a well-articulated blend of stone, glass and wood structure that provide an inviting and nurturing environment for philanthropic activities and scientific conferences.
Maximizing the beauty of its surroundings, the building’s formal interior spaces encircle a graceful, meditative courtyard. Constructed with expansive volumes and detailed with rich, durable mahogany, light gray limestone and rose colored sandstone, the interior finishes complement the architecture and Fund’s solid footing.
In developing spaces for the scientists and committee members to comfortably convene, the space program included a library and dining loggia, tastefully designed to support the gravity of the issues being considered therein. The board room, teleconference room, private offices, staff support and multipurpose spaces comprise the 40,000 square foot headquarters building, providing supportive, quiet and contemplative spaces for the staff so dedicated to the goals of the foundation. The quality interiors are completed by formal, yet welcoming, furnishings and a comprehensive fine arts program.
